Students spend Spring Break on an unforgettable trip organized by SU’s University Recreation.
After two quarters of grad school at Â鶹´«Ã½, I found myself looking for a pause—something refreshing, outdoorsy and far from the everyday. That’s when I came across the Trips Over Breaks section on the University Recreation (URec) website. Among the listings, an Oregon Coast trip over Spring Break caught my eye. The destination, the itinerary, the possibility of exploring the coastline, it all just clicked. I signed up and it ended up being a genuinely memorable experience in so many ways.
Though it wasn’t planned as one, the trip ended up being an all-girls getaway. Two incredible URec team leaders and five students—each of us from different programs and walks of life—came together for this coastal adventure. We set out on a Monday morning, bags packed and playlists ready, excited for the week ahead. On our way down to Oregon, we made a quick stop in the charming Astoria, visiting Astoria Column and exploring town before continuing the drive to our Airbnb tucked near Rockaway Beach.
Just a short walk from the shore, the Airbnb was spacious, cozy and located in a warm neighborhood that instantly made us feel at home. Our trip team leaders also took on the role of chefs, preparing our breakfasts and dinners—everything from pancakes and muffins to hearty meals like stir-fried noodles with tofu, lentil curry and a comfort-packed cornbread and chilli combo. Eating together at the start and the end of the day felt like its own tradition, one that added to the whole experience.
Over the next few days, we explored the stunning Oregon coastline, each stop adding its own kind of magic. My first ever hike since moving to Seattle was at Neahkahnie Mountain and I couldn't have asked for a better introduction. The trail was steep in parts, but the view from the summit made every step worth it. The team leaders were supportive throughout, leading from the front and back, offering breaks and cheering us all on as we made the trek. Later that day, Cannon Beach and Haystack Rock gave us postcard-worthy views.
In the following days, we did the Drift Creek Falls hike, followed by whale watching off Depoe Bay. We explored the charming shops nearby, buying souvenirs, sipping coffee and sharing moments of joy over unexpected finds. There was also a visit to the Tillamook Creamery, where we indulged with cheese samples and ice cream. Back at Rockaway Beach, we took in the stunning coastal views and strolled along the shore, feeling the peaceful rhythm of the ocean.
Indoors, our downtime had its own rhythm—some painted, some read and a few of us spent late evenings working on puzzles. Beyond the beauty of the landscapes, what really stood out to me was the ease with which our group connected. We talked about school, home life, movies, food and all the in-betweens. There were many moments of laughter. It reminded me how refreshing it is to step out of your regular routine and say yes to new experiences.
URec’s Trips Over Breaks are more than a getaway—they’re an invitation to connect with nature, your peers and maybe even a new part of yourself. Visit to learn more and for an unforgettable opportunity to explore, recharge and grow outside of the classroom.
